Achieving Your Vision through Strategic Planning

Good strategic planning helps nonprofits clarify where their organization is going, how it's going to get there, and how it will know when it's arrived. It creates the framework for board and staff to focus their energy and resources toward common goals.

This half-day workshop is a practical introduction to the key concepts and techniques of strategic planning and will help participants understand how to design an effective planning process that meets their organization’s needs.

The session will cover:

  • The nature and role of strategic planning (what strategic planning is and is not)
  • The components of a typical strategic planning process
  • When, where, why, and how board, staff and key stakeholders should be involved
  • How the strategic plan connects to other aspects of an organization, such as budgeting, outcomes measurement, and quality improvement
  • What components need to be in place to successfully implement a strategic plan and how to integrate strategic thinking and planning into an organization's culture
  • How to find the right fit with a strategic planning consultant

Presenter:

Lily Bloom Domingo, principal, CommUnity Works, was formerly the chief operating officer and director of Training and Consulting Services at the Hawai`i Alliance of Nonprofit Organizations. Lily is a skilled facilitator who has worked with numerous nonprofit organizations statewide on their strategic planning processes. She has also designed course work in strategic planning for Kapiolani Community College's Nonprofit Management Certificate Program and for Aloha United Way.
