As the economy worsens and Hawaii's nonprofits are even more challenged than ever, the advice about what we should do has been "depressingly empty." Calls for us to "focus on our missions" or "be strategic" are abstract at best. Other suggestions like "monitor expenses closely," and "delay the start of capital projects" are good advice, but obvious. And then there's the good advice like "diversify your revenue streams" that's good advice the same way "lose weight" and "achieve inner peace" are good advice: the reason we aren't doing it isn't because it hadn't occurred to us!*
On December 9, join nonprofit leaders, volunteers and supporters from across the state to hear keynote speaker, Jan Masaoka, editor of Blue Avocado, share her pragmatic thoughts on best practices nonprofits can employ during this challenging time. This combined event will include a business meeting to elect new members to the HANO board, a state of the sector update, mini-sessions with providers of nonprofit products and services and a discussion of advocacy issues on the horizon.
